Align Magazine

Press Play Issue

Context
For the “Press Play” edition of Align Magazine, the theme centered on spontaneity, joy, and reconnecting with simple pleasures. The challenge was to translate this idea into a visually compelling photoshoot that felt both editorial and conceptually strong.

Insight
Playfulness often comes from breaking expectations—especially in environments that feel familiar. By introducing unexpected elements into a natural setting, the work can spark curiosity and invite viewers to experience joy more freely.

Big Idea
Create a whimsical coastal narrative that encourages viewers to “press play” on life—blending nature, surreal styling, and unexpected props to capture a sense of carefree indulgence and imagination.

Execution

  • Art directed a coastal photoshoot combining unconventional beach styling with playful, surreal elements

  • Incorporated props like bubbles and cake to introduce contrast and visual surprise

  • Curated wardrobe that subverts typical beachwear, adding to the unexpected, editorial feel

  • Focused on light, movement, and natural textures to maintain a connection to the environment

  • Composed imagery that balances spontaneity with intentional storytelling

Process
Began by interpreting the “Press Play” theme through the lens of play, indulgence, and nature. Developed a visual concept that juxtaposed coastal settings with unexpected, almost childlike elements. Planned styling and props to feel intentionally out of place yet cohesive. Directed the shoot with an emphasis on movement, experimentation, and capturing candid moments. Refined the final images to ensure they communicated a strong, unified narrative—showcasing the ability to turn abstract themes into engaging visual stories.
